Located in the south-central part of Texas, San Antonio is the second most populous city in the state and the county seat of Bexar County. San Antonio is the seventh-most populated city in the United States and was the fastest growing city in the United States for 10 years straight starting in 2000. San Antonio has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and short, mild winters; San Antonio is in one of the most flash-flood prone regions in North America. Going back in history, the area was inhabited for thousands of years by varying cultures of indigenous peoples; the Payaya Indians occupied the area when the first Europeans arrived. A group of Spanish explorers came upon the river and the Payaya settlement in 1691; they named the river and settlement “San Antonio” after Saint Anthony of Padua. Many years passed before any Spanish settlement took place. Development of the Spanish colonial city began in 1718 with the construction of the Misión de San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo) and the Presidio San Antonio de Bexar. San Antonio eventually became the largest Spanish settlement in Texas and the capital of Tejas. The Battle of the Alamo took place in 1836 and in 1849, Anglo-Americans gained control of San Antonio.
Downtown San Antonio is home to many of the city’s famous attractions, businesses, and structures. Much of the economy is centered on military, tourism, health care, civil service, and financial services. The South Texas Medical Center is located in northwest San Antonio and consists of 900 acres of medical-related facilities. San Antonio has one of the largest concentrations of military bases in the country; the defense industry provides a $5 billion impact to the economy.
