Area code 214 can be found in Texas serving most of the eastern portion of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Area code 214 is located in the Central Time Zone and covers Dallas County. When area code 214 was put into service in 1947, it was one of the 86 original area codes created by AT&T. In 1953, a small part of area code 214 was used to create area code 817. Area code 214 was split in 1990 to form area code 903 and split again in 1995 to form area code 972. In 1999, area code 214 was overlaid with area code 469; area code 972 was converted into an additional overlay.
Located in North Texas, Dallas is the third most populous city in the state and the most populous city in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex metropolitan area. Dallas is the ninth most populous city in the United States and the county seat of Dallas County; portions of the city are located in Rockwall, Kaufman, Denton, and Collin counties. Dallas has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. Located near the heart of Tornado Alley, Dallas is prone to extreme weather, hailstorms, and tornadoes. Going back in history, the Caddo Nation inhabited the area before Spanish colonists claimed the territory of Texas. France also claimed the area but the Adams–Onís Treaty of 1819 placed the area well within Spanish territory. The area became part of the Mexican state in 1821 and the Republic of Texas broke off from Mexico in 1836. John Neely Bryan surveyed the area in 1839 and then founded Dallas in 1841. Dallas first experienced major growth in 1873 when multiple rail lines were built throughout the city. From 1874 to 1929, Dallas went from a center of farming and ranching to a major industrial city.
Home to one of the largest school districts in the United States and to several major universities, Dallas is a major center of education for much of the South Central United States. The real estate market and the economy are currently doing very well in Dallas. Much of the economy is centered on banking, commerce, technology, energy, healthcare, and telecommunications. Dallas is home to 9 Fortune 500 companies and to 17 billionaires. Home to major shopping malls such as the Highland Park Village, the Galleria Dallas, and the NorthPark Center, Dallas has the highest number of shopping centers per capita in the United States. When it comes to sports, the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex is home to six major professional sports teams, however only two of the teams are based in Dallas, which are the Dallas Mavericks (NBA) and the Dallas Stars (NHL).

Dallas is famous for its barbecue and has more restaurants per capita than New York City. When it comes to parks and recreation, Dallas is home to 381 parks and over 150 miles of trails. The Arts District in Downtown Dallas is home to a number of notable art venues such as the Dallas Museum of Art, the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, and the Nasher Sculpture Center. Like all large cities, Dallas is home to many tourist attractions including the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the American Airlines Center, the Dallas World Aquarium, and the Dallas Zoo.
