Area code 248 was established on May 10, 1997 as a split from area code 810. Eventually area code 248 was overlaid with area code 947 in 2002.
Located in the northwest part of Wayne County in Michigan is Livonia. This city in area code 248 is labeled as a large suburb with a range of traditional neighborhoods (mostly built in the 1950s and 1960s) connected to the metropolitan area by freeways. Going back in history, Livonia was first settled by pioneers from New York and England. Livonia was established as a township on March 17, 1835 and then was incorporated into a city on May 23, 1950. Former presidents to visit the city include Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. Today Livonia has an estimated population of 96,942 (2010 Census), making it Michigan’s ninth largest municipality. The racial makeup of the city is 92% White, 3.4% Black, 2.5% Asian, and 2.5% Hispanic (2010 Census). Livonia’s economy is based around its commercial and industrial sectors, restaurants, and retail stores. Other facilities that help out its economy include schools, colleges, parks, churches, and the St. Mary Mercy Hospital. When it comes to sports, hockey is a big thing in Livonia; the city is home to the largest amateur hockey association in Michigan, Livonia Hockey Association, and to two-time state champions, Livonia Knights.
Incidents of violent crime are extremely low here; in 2011, Troy was ranked the safest city in Michigan. The economy is based around Troy being a major business and shopping destination for residents in the Metro Detroit area. With numerous office centers, Troy thrives in the automotive and financial sectors. Bank of America has a major operations center in Troy while the Top of Troy is the city’s tallest building. In regards to shopping, Troy is home to the upscale Somerset Collection, a mall featuring a skywalk and over 180 stores. One of the biggest attractions in the city is the Troy Historic Village, which is a fully interactive historical museum displaying the various stages of the history of Troy. The Troy Historic Village contains ten original, complete structures that are full of artifacts; structures include a general store, a blacksmith’s shop, and an 18th century schoolhouse and estate. Two of the largest Protestant churches in the United States, Kensington Community Church and Woodside Bible Church, are located in Troy. When it comes to education, the city is known to have an outstanding school system. The schools here have a high graduation rate and a high percentage of students that go on to attend college.

Located among Metro Detroit’s upscale northwestern suburbs in Oakland County in Michigan is Farmington Hills. With an estimated population of 79,740 (2010 Census), Farmington Hills is the second largest city in Oakland County. The racial makeup of the city is 69.7% White, 17.4% Black, 10.1% Asian, and 1.9% Hispanic (2010 Census). With an extremely low crime rate, Farmington Hills is considered one of the safest cities in Michigan and in the United States; it ranked as the 30th safest city in America in 2010. The city serves as a major business center for the greater Detroit area, with many of the large corporations falling into the automotive and financial sectors. The top three employers in the city are the Botsford Hospital, the Robert Bosch Corporation, and the Farmington Public Schools. Places to visit include Heritage Park and the Holocaust Memorial Center, the only Holocaust Memorial in Michigan. It is important not to confuse Farmington Hills with Farmington; even with separate addresses and services, the two cities are often thought of as the same community. In 2006, a public meeting was held to discuss the possibility of the two cities merging as a money saving venture.
