Battle Creek is a city that lies in northwest Calhoun County in Michigan at the junction of the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek rivers. The city has quite an interesting past. Battle Creek was a major stop on the Underground Railroad during the Plantation era and the Seventh-day Adventist Church was formally established here in 1863. Important individuals who spoke in the city include Dr. Martin Luther King, Muhammad Ali, L.B. Johnson, and Hubert Humphrey. Probably the most interesting thing about Battle Creek is that the ever-popular Kellogg’s Toasted Corn Flakes was produced here, therefore giving the city the nickname of “The Cereal City.” It was the Kellogg Company that was behind the 1983 merger of Battle Creek Township into the city of Battle Creek.

The city also has a humid continental climate, meaning hot summers and no dry season. Festivals that are held yearly in the city include the International Festival of Lights, the Battle Creek Field of Flight Entertainment Festival, and the World’s Longest Breakfast Table. Points of interest in Battle Creek include Binder Park Zoo, Leila Arboretum, Fort Custer Recreation Area, and Kingman Museum and Planetarium.

Portage is a city that lies in Kalamazoo County in Michigan. The city is next to the southern boundary of Kalamazoo while Austin Lake is in the southeast part of the city. The estimated population of the city is 46,292 and the racial makeup of the city is 86.9% White, 4.9% Black, 3.8% Asian, and 3.1% Hispanic (2010 Census). With a crime rate higher than the national average, Portage is not one of the safest communities to reside in. Portage’s economy is based around the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, the medical technologies firm Stryker Corporation, and the hydraulic valve manufacturing company FEMA Corporation. When it comes to recreation, the city is known for its vast network of trails and historical parks used for canoeing, walking, and cycling. Portage’s extensive bikeway system was created in 1989 and has grown to exceed 55 miles. The biggest point of interest in Portage is the Air Zoo, an aviation museum and indoor amusement park.
