Grand Island is located in Nebraska and is the county seat of Hall County. Going back in history, surveyors from the Union Pacific Railroad laid out and platted Grand Island in 1866. Two years later, the railroad extended to Grand Island, sparking an increase in trade and business. Grand Island was then incorporated in 1872. In 1890, there was the introduction of sugar beets as a crop in Nebraska; the first sugar beet processing factory in the United States was built in Grand Island. In 1980, the Grand Island tornado outbreak was when seven tornadoes touched down in or near Grand Island; the book and movie Night of the Twisters were based on this event. Today Grand Island has a population of 48,520 and the racial makeup of the city is 80.0% White, 26.7% Hispanic, 2.1% African American, and 1.2% Asian (2010 Census).
