Syracuse is a city in New York and is the county seat of Onondaga County. The city was named after the original Greek city Syracuse. Syracuse is located at the intersection of Interstate 81 and Interstate 90 and is the economic and educational center of Central New York. Syracuse is situated at the northeast corner of the Finger Lakes region; the land north of the city is flat while the land south of the city is hilly. Syracuse has a humid continental climate and is considered the snowiest city in the United States. Going back in history, the area was settled in the 1600s by French missionaries. The report of salty brine springs in the area in the mid 1600s led to the beginning of the commercial salt production in Syracuse from the late 1700s to the early 1900s. The rapid development of commercial salt production earned Syracuse the nickname “The Salt City.” After the decline of the salt industry in 1865, the city turned to manufacturing, which paved the way for companies such as the Franklin Automobile Company and the Century Motor Vehicle Company.
Some of the most widely recognized neighborhoods in Syracuse include Downtown Syracuse, Eastwood, Little Italy, University Hill, and Westcott. Over the past decade, industrial jobs have left the city and local and state government jobs have declined. The city’s top employers are in education and the service industry; the top three employers are State University of New York Upstate Medical University, Syracuse University, and Wegmans Food Markets. Points of interest in the city include the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, the Erie Canal Museum, the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology, and the Everson Museum of Art. Major parks in the city include Burnet Park, Thornden Park, and Onondaga Park. Shopping, dining, and entertainment are done at Destiny USA, the sixth largest shopping center in the United States. When it comes to sports, Syracuse is a top-division, minor-league and college sports city.
