Area code 385 is the area code for the Wasatch Front region in north-central Utah. Area code 385 is located in the Mountain Time Zone and covers Davis County, Morgan County, Salt Lake County, Utah County, and Weber County. Area code 385 was put into effect in 2009 and was created as an overlay of area code 801.
Located in central Utah, Salt Lake City is the capital of the state and the county seat of Salt Lake County. Salt Lake City is the most populous city in Utah and in the Wasatch Front region. Salt Lake City is located in the Salt Lake Valley near the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake and is surrounded by the Wasatch Mountains and the Oquirrh Mountains. Going back in history, Native Americans had lived in the Salt Lake Valley for thousands of years. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) founded Great Salt Lake City in 1847; Brigham Young was the president of the church. Young and the members sought a secluded area to safely practice their religion; they were the first people of European descent to permanently settle in Utah. In 1849, the Mormon pioneers proposed the State of Deseret, however the United States government never recognized it and instead established the Utah Territory in 1850. Fillmore was designated as the territorial capital but was later replaced by Great Salt Lake City in 1856, which is when the city officially became Salt Lake City. The Mormon practice of polygamy caused public outcry, which resulted in President James Buchanan sending an army of 2,500 soldiers in 1857. The armed confrontation between the soldiers and the Mormons was referred to as the Utah War. The church eventually abandoned polygamy in 1890, which allowed Salt Lake City to become the state capital in 1896.
Much of the economy is centered on government, transportation, trade, health services, and professional and business services. Ever since Salt Lake City was host to the 2002 Winter Olympics, tourism has been on the rise. During the summer, residents and tourists head to the Wasatch Mountains for hiking, camping, and rock climbing while skiing and snowboarding are popular during the winter season. When it comes to sports, Salt Lake City is home to the Utah Jazz (NBA) and Real Salt Lake (MLS). Salt Lake City is considered a bicycle-friendly city, as there are many streets with bicycle lanes.
