Where Is Area Code 386?

As the home to NASCAR’s headquarters as well as the headquarters of the Grand American Road Racing Association, the Daytona Beach area code has an international reputation. It is no surprise that Daytona Beach is one of the few places in the United States where you can actually drive your car right on the beach. The 386 area code covers Daytona Beach as well as parts of nearby counties. Implemented in 2001, the 386 area code is still fairly new. The 386 area code spells out the word “fun” on most telephone keypads, which is a reference to the region’s nickname as the Fun Coast. Due to the rapid population growth in this region, the 386 area code was randomly assigned to several areas. As a result, it is one of the few area codes in the country that does not cover a consistent land area. Parts of the 386 area code are interrupted by other area codes. Initially, area code 386 was just supposed to offer a temporary band aid relief effort for the other areas but it is unlikely that it will be replaced by a new area code anytime in the near future.

Daytona Beach is a popular resort town on the eastern coast of Florida. Located near many major attractions, Daytona Beach attracts tourists from all over the country. The majority of tourists in the 386 area code are there to enjoy a day at the beach in addition to nearby amusement parks in Orlando. The other set of tourists in Daytona Beach is the biker crowd. Bike enthusiasts line the streets of Daytona each March and October for Bike Week and Biketoberfest respectively. Naturally, the presence of the Daytona International Speedway also attracts tourists that want to watch races in the 386 area code.

Daytona Beach has a fairly small population that is less than 65,000, especially when compared to the 8 million visitors to the region each year. The Southeast Museum of Photography and Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center and Visual Arts Gallery are popular with the artsy crowd that vacation in area code 386. The photography museum features thousands of photographs by respected photographers. With a photography collection that rivals that of popular museums in major cities, the Southeast Museum of Photography holds a special place in the nation’s photography community. On a completely different note, the Ocean Center is a popular venue for both tourists and locals. The multi-million dollar facility is known to be a leader in entertainment. Hockey, football, and basketball games are frequently hosted within the Ocean Center. However, it is mostly used for concerts, wrestling matches, circus performances, and ice shows in the 386 area code. Its large capacity also makes the Ocean Center the perfect venue for the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Show and a variety of expos.  Lastly, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station is the tallest lighthouse in the state of Florida, which appropriately draws many tourists to Daytona Beach. Visitors at the Ponce Inlet Light Station can see brilliant views of the surrounding area after the lengthy stair climb to the top. Undoubtedly, a trip to the 786 area code would be incomplete with a stop at the Ponce Inlet Light Station.

Unfortunately, Daytona Beach is very close to the Atlantic Ocean, which makes it vulnerable to severe hurricanes. Usually, hurricanes scathe by the Daytona Beach avoiding major damage. Nevertheless, the effects of nearby hurricanes can be felt in area code 386. For instance, power outages and disrupted phone lines are common during hurricane season in Daytona Beach. Additionally, tornadoes frequent the 386 area code. In fact, tornadoes are known to be deadly in this region as they occur well above the national average. Despite these natural disasters, Daytona Beach maintains a fairly pleasant climate for most of the year. Tourists in the region can expect to find consistently sunny days throughout their vacations in Daytona Beach.

Crime is fairly high in the 386 area code. A resident or tourist in the 386 area code has more than twice the chance of becoming the victim of a violent crime than in the rest of Florida. In fact, assault rates are more than three times the national average in Daytona Beach. Motor vehicle theft and burglaries are at similarly high rates in Daytona Beach. It is fairly remarkable that a place with such a small population is capable of an incredibly high crime rate.
