Area code 434 is the area code for the south central portion of Virginia. Area code 434 is located in the Eastern Time Zone and covers 24 counties of Virginia. Area code 434 was put into effect on June 1, 2001, and was created from a split of area code 804.

Lynchburg is an independent city in south central Virginia; independent cities are administratively independent of any county. Lynchburg is a vibrant city located in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the scenic James River. Lynchburg is nicknamed the “City of Seven Hills” because it is spread across seven major hills: College Hill, Daniel's Hill, Diamond Hill, Tinbridge Hill, Franklin Hill, Garland Hill, and White Rock Hill. Lynchburg quickly grew, which led to its incorporation as a town in 1805. Before his death, Lynch built Lynchburg's first bridge across the James River, which replaced his ferry in 1812. By the time Lynchburg was incorporated as a city in 1852, it was among the richest cities per capita in the United States; tobacco, slave trading, and iron and steel powered its economy.

Nuclear technology, material handling, and pharmaceuticals are some of the industries that make up the economy while the two largest employers are Centra Lynchburg General Hospital and Liberty University. The Old City Cemetery is the busiest and most visited historic site in Lynchburg. In addition to being an active place of burial and remembrance, the cemetery contains five small museums that let visitors learn about the history of the cemetery and the people buried there. With close to 300 different varieties of heirloom roses planted throughout the grounds, the cemetery is home to the largest public collection of heirloom roses in Virginia. Lynchburg is home to the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, the first Snowflex facility in the United States; Snowflex is artificial snow. Located atop Liberty University’s mountain property, the outdoor recreational complex features year-round skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. When it comes to biking and walking, Lynchburg is home to one of the most distinctive trail systems in Virginia. Trails such as the Blackwater Creek Trail and RiverWalk Trail pass through lush natural areas and Lynchburg’s historic downtown. Other points of interest in the city include Amazement Square, Point of Honor, Historic Sandusky, the Lynchburg Museum, and the Maier Museum of Art.

Charlottesville is an independent city in central Virginia; even though it is an independent city, it is the county seat of Albemarle County. Charlottesville is nestled at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Rivanna River. The city has been home to many notable people such as Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and Edgar Allan Poe. Charlottesville has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and cool winters. Charlottesville has a population of 43,475 and the racial makeup of the city is 69.1% White, 19.4% African American, 6.4% Asian, and 5.1% Hispanic (2010 Census). Charlottesville is home to the University of Virginia, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. Located across the street from the university is a commercial district known as The Corner. The Corner caters to the university, as it is full of restaurants, bars, bookstores, and nightclubs. The biggest tourist attraction in the city is Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. The Monticello was Jefferson’s primary plantation and is renowned for its extensive gardens and architecture.
