Plano is the ninth most populous city in Texas and is mostly within Collin County. Located 20 miles northeast of Dallas, Plano is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Plano is considered to be one of the best cities to live in America because of the low unemployment, taxes, and housing prices compared to other major cities. Plano has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. Going back in history, the first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1840s to take advantage of land grants. In 1848, the town of Fillmore was founded, named in honor of President Millard Fillmore. In 1852, the town was renamed Plano. When the Houston and Central Texas Railway arrived in 1872, Plano grew as a result of being linked to Dallas and Houston and new markets. In 1881, the majority of the buildings in the business district were destroyed when a fire broke out. Shortly after the fire, the business district was rebuilt and business again flourished through the 1880s. By 1980, the population surged when many large corporations moved their headquarters to the city. Plano was given the All-America City Award in 1995 and by 2000, was one of Dallas’ largest suburbs.

Plano has a population of 259,841 and the racial makeup of the city is 66.9% White, 16.9% Asian, 14.7% Hispanic, and 7.6% African American (2010 Census). The majority of Chinese Americans in Texas are located in Plano and Houston.

When it comes to the economy, some of the country's largest and most recognized companies are headquartered in Plano; companies include Rent-A-Center, Frito-Lay, Pizza Hut, and JCPenney. The majority of Plano's visitors are business travelers, resulting from the many corporations headquartered in the city and the fact that the city is so close to Dallas. The Shops at Legacy is a major shopping mall that features upscale retailers, award-winning restaurants, and lively bars and entertainment venues. The two largest parks in the city are the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve and the Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve. The largest annual event in the city is the Plano Balloon Festival, a festival that features fireworks, live bands, and various hot air balloons.

Garland has a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. Going back in history, two communities, Embree and Duck Creek, sprang up in the area in 1874. The new location was named Garland and soon after, Embree, Duck Creek, and Garland were combined to form the city of Garland. By the late 1930s, Garland became an industrial city when the city’s resources attracted new industries. From 1950 to 1954, a serious and extended drought plagued the city.
