Where Is Area Code 505?

Area code 505 is the area code for the northwestern and central portions of New Mexico. When area code 505 was put into service on January 1, 1947, it originally covered all of New Mexico because it was New Mexico’s original area code. When New Mexico experienced ample growth in population and telephone use, area code 505 was split to form area code 575 in 2007. Area code 505 is located in the Mountain Time Zone and covers 12 counties of New Mexico.

Albuquerque is the most populous city in New Mexico and is the county seat of Bernalillo County. Albuquerque was named in recognition of Francisco, Duke of Albuquerque. Albuquerque is situated in the central part of New Mexico and has one of the highest elevations of any major city in the United States. The city’s location in the northern tip of the Chihuahuan Desert, near the boundary of the Colorado Plateau, gives it its cold semi-arid climate. Running along the eastern side of Albuquerque is the Sandia Mountains while the Rio Grande flows through the city. Albuquerque got its start as a town when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway depot was built in 1880. Albuquerque was incorporated as a town in 1885 and then was incorporated as a city in 1891. By 1900, Albuquerque had an electric street railway, a multimodal transit hub, and the University of Mexico. In 1926, the first travelers on U.S. Route 66 appeared in Albuquerque; with their arrival came numerous motels, restaurants, and gift shops along the roadside.

The University of New Mexico is located in Albuquerque and is the largest public flagship university in New Mexico. When it comes to the economy, industrial output is centered on Albuquerque; the city is also at the center of the New Mexico Technology Corridor. With so many things to do and see in Albuquerque, some of the major points of interest in the city include the Sandia Peak Tramway, the Albuquerque Biological Park, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, the Petroglyph National Monument, and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. One of the biggest annual events in the city is the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the largest hot air balloon festival in the world. The New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair has been held annually in Albuquerque since 1961.

Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico and is the county seat of Santa Fe County. Santa Fe is the fourth most populous city and the oldest city in New Mexico. Santa Fe has a dry steppe climate, meaning hot summers and chilly, dry winters. Going back in history, the area was originally occupied by Tanoan-speaking peoples who lived in Pueblo villages. In 1598, the first European effort to colonize the region was led by Juan de Onate. Santa Fe was made the capital of New Mexico in 1610, making it the oldest state capital in the United States. New Mexico became the 47th state of the United States of America, with Santa Fe as its capital, in 1912. Today Santa Fe has a population of 67,947 and the racial makeup of the city is 78.9% White, 48.7% Hispanic, 2.1% Native American, 1.4% Asian, and 1.0% African American (2010 Census). Santa Fe falls along the lines of a dangerous city. Much of Santa Fe’s economy is based on tourism, with much of the tourist activity taking place in the historic downtown area. With so much to experience in Santa Fe, some of the major points of interest in the city include the Santa Fe Opera House, the Museum of International Folk Art, the New Mexico History Museum, the Loretto Chapel, the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, and the Santa Fe Botanical Garden.
