Area code 512 is the area code for a large part of Central Texas, which includes the city of Austin and its suburbs. Area code 512 is located in the Central Time Zone and covers 12 counties of Texas. When area code 512 was put into service in 1947, it was one of the 86 original area codes created by AT&T. Area code 512 was split in 1992 to form area code 210 and split again in 1999 to form area code 361. In 2013, area code 512 was overlaid with area code 737.
