Freeport is a village in Nassau County and is the second biggest village in New York. Freeport is within the town of Hempstead and is situated on the South Shore of Long Island. Salt flats and bays bound Freeport to the south. Going back in history, the area was originally inhabited by Metoac Indians. In 1659, Edward Raynor cleared land, built a cabin, and named the area Raynortown. In 1853, the village was renamed Freeport. Post Civil War, Freeport was a center for commercial oystering, but that trade quickly declined due to changing salinity and increased pollution in Great South Bay. In 1868, the Southside Railroad helped further Freeport’s development and in 1892, Freeport was incorporated as a village. Shortly after becoming incorporated, Freeport turned into a tourist and sportsman’s destination for fishing and boating.

During the summer, Freeport attracts many people from across Long Island and New York City. There are also party cruise ships and casino boats along the canals and an 18-hole miniature golf course at the end of the strip. Recreational activities such as ice-skating and basketball can be done at the Freeport Recreation Center.
