Area code 541 is the area code for the majority of Oregon, except the northwest part of the state. Area code 541 covers 28 counties of Oregon while parts of area code 458 are located in the Pacific Time Zone and others are located in the Mountain Time Zone. Area code 541 was put into service on November 5, 1995, and was created from a split of area code 503. In 2010, area code 541 was overlaid with area code 458.
Located in a region known as the Pacific Northwest, Eugene is the third most populous city in Oregon. Eugene is the county seat of Lane County and is known as “Emerald City” and “Track Town, USA.” Eugene is situated in the Willamette Valley about 50 miles east of the Oregon Coast. Eugene has a Mediterranean climate and is known for having the highest grass pollen counts in the United States. Eugene has a population of 156,185 and the racial makeup of the city is 85.8% White, 7.8% Hispanic, 4.0% Asian, and 1.4% African American (2010 Census). Like most large cities, Eugene has a high crime rate. The two largest employers in the city are PeaceHealth Medical Group and University of Oregon. Medford is the eighth most populous city in Oregon and is the county seat of Jackson County. Situated in a rain shadow known as the Rogue Valley, the majority of rain associated with the Pacific Northwest and Oregon skips Medford. Going back in history, Medford was established in 1883 when land was given to the Oregon and California Railroad for a depot and surrounding town. Medford was incorporated as a town in 1885 and incorporated as a city in 1905. Medford replaced Jacksonville as the county seat of Jackson County in 1927 and Interstate 5 was completed in 1967. Since the 1990s, Medford’s historic downtown has undergone an economic recovery including the restoration of old buildings and the installation of sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
Unfortunately Medford has an extremely high crime rate, placing it among the top five most dangerous cities in Oregon; methamphetamine use is a problem in Medford and is believed to contribute to the high crime rate. With two major medical centers in Medford, much of the economy is centered on the health care industry. Harry & David, the premium food and gift producer and retailer, is headquartered in Medford. One of the biggest annual events in Medford is the Art in Bloom Festival, a springtime festival featuring the artwork of artists and horticulturalists in addition to live entertainment, children’s activities, and food. Points of interest in the city include Alba Park, Bear Creek Park, Prescott Park, and the Craterian Theater.

Albany is the eleventh most populous city in Oregon and is the county seat of Linn County. Albany is situated in the central part of the Willamette Valley at the confluence of the Calapooia River and the Willamette River. Albany’s climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Albany was founded in 1848 and was named after the founder’s hometown of Albany, New York. Albany has a population of 50,158 and the racial makeup of the city is 87.8% White, 11.4% Hispanic, 1.4% Asian, and 0.7% African American (2010 Census). Albany is a somewhat safe city to reside in. The decline of the timber industry has forced Albany to turn towards retail trade, manufacturing, and health care. Albany is also a major producer of zirconium, hafnium, and titanium and a major exporter of grass seed. Albany is home to two festivals every year, the Northwest Art and Air Festival and the Willamette River Festival.
