Binghamton is a city in New York and is the county seat of Broome County. Binghamton is located in the Southern Tier region near the Pennsylvania border at the confluence of the Susquehanna River and the Chenango River. Binghamton is the primary city and cultural center of Greater Binghamton. Binghamton has a humid continental climate, meaning warm, wet summers and cold, snowy winters; it is among the rainiest and cloudiest cities in New York. Going back in history, the area was settled in 1779 by troops of the Sullivan Expedition. In 1786, William Bingham bought the 10,000 acre patent for the land. The village of Binghamton was incorporated in 1834. Binghamton experienced major growth from the Chenango Canal, the Erie Railroad, and the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad. In 1858, the New York State Inebriate Asylum opened in Binghamton, becoming the first institution in the United States to treat alcoholism as a mental disorder. In 1867, Binghamton was incorporated as a city and was given the nickname “Parlor City.” The growth of Binghamton as a manufacturing hub in the late 19th century and early 20th century resulted in an influx of immigrants. During this time period, Binghamton was the second largest manufacturer of cigars in the United States; the city also became dependent on large manufacturers such as Endicott Johnson and IBM.

Binghamton has a population of 47,376 and the racial makeup of the city is 77.6% White, 11.4% African American, 6.4% Hispanic, and 4.2% Asian (2010 Census). Binghamton might be a small city, however the crime rate here is extremely high, putting Binghamton among the top ten most dangerous cities in New York.

While Binghamton’s economy is still centered on technology and defense manufacturing, the city has started to move towards education and health care. There are also many food services, distribution companies, and shopping areas that help contribute to the economy. Points of interest in the city include the Phelps Mansion Museum, the Otsiningo Park, the Discovery Center of the Southern Tier, and the Roberson Museum and Science Center. Popular annual events in the city include Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally, July Fest, Blues on the Bridge, and St. Mary of the Assumption Bazaar. Binghamton is home to six antique carousels, which is why the city is known as the Carousel Capital of the World. Spiedie, a sandwich that is made up of cubes of beef, chicken, lamb, pork, veal, or venison, is the regional dish.
