Area code 609 is the area code for parts of Central New Jersey, South Jersey, and the Jersey Shore. Area code 609 was put into service on January 1, 1957, and was created from a split of area code 201. In 1999, the southwestern part of area code 609 was split off as area code 856. Area code 609 is the largest area code in New Jersey and covers 9 counties of New Jersey.

Trenton is the capital of New Jersey and is the county seat of Mercer County. Trenton has a humid continental climate, meaning hot, humid summers and cold, damp winters. Atlantic City is located in Atlantic County in New Jersey. Atlantic City is a resort city that is known for its beach, boardwalk, and casinos. The city is featured in the U.S. version of Monopoly. Going back in history, in 1853, the first commercial hotel was built. One year later, the city was incorporated, which was the same time the Camden and Atlantic Railroad train service started. The Atlantic City Boardwalk opened in 1870 and was the first boardwalk in the United States. By 1874, the rail was bringing almost 500,000 passengers a year to the city. By 1878, massive hotels opened up all over the city and a second railroad line was constructed to transport tourists to the city. In 1883, David Bradley produced salt water taffy. During the mid to late 20th century, Atlantic City was hit with poverty, crime, and economic decline; the majority of hotels were either shut down or converted. To revitalize the city, casino gambling was approved in 1976.

Atlantic City has a population of 39,558 and the racial makeup of the city is 38.29% African American, 30.45% Hispanic, 26.65% White, and 15.55% Asian (2010 Census). Unfortunately Atlantic City has a crime rate so high that it is the first or second most dangerous city in New Jersey; this might be a result from the city’s high unemployment rate. Known as the “Gambling Capital of the East Coast,” Atlantic City’s economy is based on casinos, the beach, and the Atlantic City Boardwalk. There are numerous shopping districts and malls located in the city; major shopping malls include The Quarter at Tropicana, Tanger Outlets The Walk, and Playground Pier. Atlantic City is one of five municipalities in New Jersey that allow the public to access beaches monitored by lifeguards for free. Atlantic City has been the home of the Miss America pageant since 1921; the pageant was moved to Las Vegas for seven years before returning to the city. Points of interest in the city include the Borgata Casino, the Caesars Atlantic City Casino, the Tropicana Casino, the Harrah’s Atlantic City Casino, the Bally’s Atlantic City Casino, the Absecon Lighthouse, the Steel Pier Amusement Park, and the Atlantic City Aquarium Historic Gardner’s Basin.
