Area Code 671
Where Is Area Code 671?
Updated: October 22nd 2024
Located in the western Pacific Ocean, Guam is considered a territory and not a U.S. state. It is classified as an unincorporated and organized territory that is overseen by the United States federal government. Area code 671 applies to the whole territory of Guam. Guam was added to the North American Numbering Plan in 1997. Before 1997, calls to Guam from people in the United States were rather costly because callers had to dial ‘011-671’ and then the actual phone number, similar to international calls. Area code 671 observes the Chamorro Time Zone.
Guam has quite a unique and rich history. The island was settled some 4,000 years ago by a group of people known as the Chamorros. The first European to visit the island in 1521 was Ferdinand Magellan. Guam was taken over by Spain in 1668 but then was captured by the United States during the Spanish-American War in 1898 under the Treaty of Paris. The United States lost Guam to the Japanese in 1941 but then recaptured the island in 1944. In 1950, the Guam Organic Act of 1950 classified the island as an unincorporated and organized territory of the United States, therefore granting the people of Guam U.S. citizenship.
Currently it is estimated that 173,647 people live in Guam; the native Chamorros account for nearly 40% of the total population while Filipinos follow closely behind with 30%. The official languages of Guam are English and Chamorro. The economy depends primarily on tourism; lying in the western Pacific, Guam is a popular spot for Japanese tourists. Tumon is the center of Guam’s tourist industry and features over 20 large hotels, an indoor aquarium, and plenty of shopping and entertainment venues. In addition to tourism, Guam gets a lot of money from the United States government; military bases account for 29% of Guam’s total land area.
When Guam was given area code 671 in 1997, there was no longer the high cost of international long distance calls to the United States. The majority of Guam has modern mobile phone services and high speed Internet available through DSL or cable.
While Guam is a beautiful island, it does have its fair share of ecological issues. Many bird species were driven to extinction due to the brown tree snake because the snake had no natural predators. The lack of natural predator birds has allowed the number of insects and spiders to grow out of control. There is also a loss and decline in Guam’s native plants and animals due to the introduction of feral animals, over-hunting, and habitat loss from human development. The coral reef surrounding the island has had issues with pollution, overfishing, and eroded silt, which in turn have led to decreased fishing populations.
Major Cities In Area Code 671
With a population of around 45,000, Dededo is the most populous city in Guam. Here in Dededo one will find the Guam National Wildlife Refuge and the Micronesia Mall, the largest shopping mall in Micronesia. With a population of around 20,539, Yigo is the second most populous city in Guam. It is one of Guam’s richest farming areas, its municipality is larger than any other city on the island in terms of area, and is home to the Andersen Air Force Base. With a population just shy of 20,000, Tamuning is the third most populous city in Guam. Tamuning is considered the economic center of Guam; it contains Tumon, the center of Guam’s tourist industry, Guam Premier Outlets, and Harmon Industrial Park. Tamuning is also home to the Guam Memorial Hospital, which is Guam’s only public civilian hospital. For that reason, the majority of modern civilian births on Guam take place here.
