Located in North Texas, Forth Worth is the fifth most populous city in the state and the county seat of Tarrant County. Located approximately 32 miles west of Dallas, Forth Worth is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States. Forth Worth has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. Located near the edge of Tornado Alley, Forth Worth is prone to supercell thunderstorms, which can produce hailstorms and tornados. In 2000, a powerful F3 tornado smashed through downtown Fort Worth, causing significant damage to numerous buildings and skyscrapers. Going back in history, the Republic of Texas and several Native American tribes signed the Treaty of Bird's Fort in 1843; the treaty was meant to end years of hostilities between the white settlers and the Native American tribes. In January 1849, Major General William Jenkins Worth came up with the idea to build forts to mark and protect the West Texas frontier. Shortly after his proposal, he died from cholera and General William S. Harney was assigned his position as commander of the Department of Texas. Major Ripley A. Arnold was tasked with finding a new fort site; in June he established a post on the bank of the Trinity River and named it Camp Worth. Arnold moved the post to a bluff overlooking the Trinity River in August and the post was officially named Fort Worth in November. White settlers quickly settled near the fort and eventually took possession of the fort site when the fort was abandoned in September 1853. Fort Worth became the county seat of Tarrant County in 1860 and was the center of the cattle drives, which were key to producing the economic boom years of the city.
Downtown Fort Worth is home to the city’s tallest buildings and skyscrapers and is the central business district of the city. Downtown Fort Worth is among America’s best downtowns due to the low unemployment rate and the high occupancy rate of both residential and retail. The heart of downtown Forth Worth is Sundance Square, a cluster of blocks that features restaurants, bars, hotels, museums, condos, shops, and movie theaters. Tourism is a major part of the economy, as the Dallas-Fort Worth region is one of the top tourist destinations in the country. Around 9 million tourists visit Fort Worth each year, bringing the city $2.5 billion annually; the city attracts tourists by promoting itself as the “City of Cowboys and Culture.” Major points of interest in the city include the Kimbell Art Museum, the Fort Worth Zoo, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, the Fort Worth Water Gardens, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Texas Motor Speedway.
