Area code 713 can be found in Texas serving Houston and its surrounding towns and cities. When area code 713 was put into service in 1947, it was one of the 86 original area codes created by AT&T. Area code 713 was split in 1983 to form area code 409 and split again in 1996 to form area code 281. In 1999, area code 281 was turned into an overlay and area code 832 was created as an overlay. In 2014, area code 346 was added as another overlay. As a result, area code 713 is the main area code, while area codes 281, 832, and 346 are overlay codes.
