Where Is Area Code 765?

Updated: October 25th 2024

The 765 area code covers Marion as well as other cities in Central Indiana, including Kokomo and Lafayette. Area code 765 was implemented as a split from the 317 area code in 1997. The 317 area code was one of the original area codes in Indiana, but residents have come to accept the new 765 area code, recognizing that massive population growth made the split inevitable.

Marion, Indiana is one of the smallest cities in the 765 area code but also one of the most well known. As the home of Indiana Wesleyan University, the Marion area code has a large number of evangelical Christian residents. In fact, Indiana Wesleyan University is the largest private university in the state of Indiana. The university has a spotless reputation and continues to be named as one of the best conservative universities in the United States. The fifteen thousand students make up nearly half of the population in Marion, making their presence significant in the 765 area code. Luckily for the Marion community, Indiana Wesleyan University students are known to contribute to the community and set an example of excellence for younger generations. The university is actually the biggest evangelical Christian university in the entire Midwest, which undoubtedly explains the students’ noticeable lack of immoral behavior.

With a former Olympic pair skater as its mayor, it is obvious that Marion takes pride in its celebrity presence.

As a graduate from the Indiana Wesleyan University, Wayne Seybold is the Republican mayor of Marion. Seybold’s team work as an American pair skater is noticeable in how he runs the city in a cooperative manner, and stays in touch with the community. It is definitely appropriate that the mayor of Marion has such a unique background. For instance Marion is widely known as Christmas City USA, as it takes pride in its extra emphasis on the holiday season. Nevertheless, the city has not only preserved the Christmas season, it has also kept most of its 31,000 residents employed and happy.

Jim Davis is indisputably the most famous export from the 765 area code. As the famous cartoonist who was responsible for creating Garflied, Davis has spread American culture to the world. Born in Marion, Davis’ talent was noticeable early on and his family’s twenty-five cats served as inspiration for his famous comic strips. Davis has won many awards and his cartoon strip was turned into a movie and television series. He is still living and continues to create new scenarios for the Garfield character. Davis’ other popular comic strips include Tumbleweeds, which entertained American children for more than forty years. As a result, it is easy to see why the city of Marion takes pride in Davis’ brilliantly creative work.

Lafayette is one of the biggest cities in area code 765. With a population of more than 60,000, Lafayette makes up a small but bustling city. Purdue University is located in the Lafayette area code and is widely known as one of the biggest agricultural institutions in the United States. With nearly 40,000 students and more than 6,000 academic staff, Purdue University makes a significant contribution to the Lafayette population. Purdue University is one of the best public universities in the United States and its students are expected to live up to the great achievements of the university’s alumni. For instance, graduates from Purdue include Nobel Prize winners, Pulitzer Prize Winners, and Grammy Award nominees. Other than its excellent programs in agriculture, the university also prides itself in its groundbreaking aerospace degrees. In fact, Purdue was the first university in the United States to offer a bachelor’s degree in aviation. Correspondingly, Purdue received a grant that was in excess of $1.3 million from the United States Air Force to further its research in aircraft fuels and engines.

Kokomo is one of the major cities in the 765 area code. The city has a rather notorious history that has tainted the world’s perception for decades. For instance, in the early 1900s, the Kokomo area code hosted the biggest racist gathering in American history. Nearly a quarter of a million members gathered in Kokomo, which is one of the events that the city is most known for.  The city remains mostly Caucasian even though racism is no longer prominent in the 765 area code. Other events in more recent years have taken the focus away from Kokomo’s questionable past and gathered the sympathy of the United States. In 1965, Kokomo experienced a huge tornado during the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak. The tornado destroyed or caused significant damage to most of Kokomo, but it did aid the city in shaking off its past history and starting a new beginning.
