Flint is a city located in Genesee County, Michigan. It is located along the Flint River in a region known as Mid Michigan. Going back in history, Flint was founded as a village in 1819 and then incorporated as a city in 1855. During the 19th century, Flint was the center of the Michigan lumber industry. Then from the late 19th century to mid 20th century, Flint was a top manufacturer of carriages and automobiles. It was in 1908 when General Motors (GM) was founded. Since the late 1960s to the end of the 20th century, Flint had faced many problems; the city suffered from deindustrialization, depopulation, unemployment, poverty, and high rates of crime. Flint’s economy plummeted in the 1980s when General Motors cut 90% of its employees. From 2002 to 2004 and then again from 2011-2015, Flint was under a state of financial emergency due to being in extreme debt. Things only got worse in 2014 with the Flint water crisis, when thousands of residents were exposed to high levels of lead in the drinking water.

Located along the Flint River, Flint has a humid continental climate; winters are cold with moderate snowfall and summers are warm to hot. Flint has a population of 102,434 and the racial makeup of the city is 56.6% Black, 37.4% White, 3.9% Hispanic, and 0.5% Asian (2010 Census).

Flint has several distinct neighborhoods. For instance, the North Side and 5th Ward are mainly African American while the University Avenue corridor of Carriage Town is home to the largest gathering of Greek housing. When it comes to crime, Flint has one of the highest crime rates in the United States due to an ongoing economic depression; in Flint someone has a 1 in 20 chance of becoming a victim of any crime. During the mid 2000s, Flint was specifically known for its high crime rates and was repeatedly ranked among the most dangerous cities in the United States. Even thought Flint is considered a dangerous city, there are plenty of things to do and see in the city. Museums in Flint include the Flint Children’s Museum, the Longway Planetarium, the Sloan Museum, the Flint Institute of Arts, the Whaley House Museum, and the Buick Automotive Gallery.
