Greenville is the most populous city in upstate South Carolina and the county seat of Greenville County. Greenville is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and located roughly halfway between Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Greenville has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and short, cool winters. Knox White is the current mayor of Greenville and has been the mayor since 1995. Going back in history, the area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee. In 1754, Richard Pearis arrived in South Carolina and traded with the Cherokee. In 1770, Pearis had a child with a Cherokee woman and as a result, received about 100,000 acres from the Cherokee. Pearis established a plantation on the Reedy River but the Patriots eventually burned it down and threw him in jail. In 1777, the majority of Cherokee land was ceded to South Carolina. Lemuel J. Alston came to Greenville County in 1788 and bought land; Alston established a village called Pleasantburg in 1797. Vardry McBee purchased Alston's land in 1816 and donated portions of land for many structures. Once Pleasantburg experienced growth, it was incorporated as Greenville in 1831. Greenville was incorporated as a city in 1869 while construction boomed in the 1870s. Cotton mills were essential to Greenville’s economy; by 1915, the city was known as the “Textile Center of the South.”

Greenville has a population of 58,409 and the racial makeup of the city is 64.0% White, 30.0% African American, 5.9% Hispanic, and 1.4% Asian (2010 Census). Unfortunately Greenville is a dangerous city to reside in.

The economy was formerly based largely on textile manufacturing but has now expanded to include technology, aviation, and automobile research. When it comes to art and music, a number of local artists operate studios and galleries in the city and there are plenty of live performances by local jazz, country, and rock bands. As the largest city in upstate South Carolina, Greenville is home to many attractions including the Falls Park on the Reedy, the Paris Mountain State Park, the Peace Center, the Greenville Zoo, the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, and the Fluor Field at the West End. Annual events in the city include Euphoria Greenville, Fall for Greenville, Artisphere, Big Fandom Greenville, and SC Comicon.

Spartanburg is a city in upstate South Carolina and the county seat of Spartanburg County. Spartanburg is nicknamed “Hub City” and “Sparkle City.” Spartanburg has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and cool, mild winters. Going back in history, a treaty with the Cherokee Nation in 1753 opened up the area for settlers. Spartanburg was founded in 1785 and was incorporated in 1831. By the late 19th century, Spartanburg was a center of textile manufacturing. Today Spartanburg has a population of 37,013 and the racial makeup of the city is 49.3% African American, 45.6% White, 3.4% Hispanic, and 1.8% Asian (2010 Census). Unfortunately Spartanburg is a dangerous city to reside in. Home to eight institutions of higher learning, Spartanburg is considered a college city. Griffin Nature Preserve, the Croft State Park, the Glendale Shoals Preserve, the Hub City Railroad Museum, and the Upward Star Center.
