Elizabeth is the fourth most populous city in New Jersey and is the county seat of Union County. Elizabeth has a humid subtropical climate, meaning hot, humid summers and cold winters. Going back in history, in 1664 a group of English settlers founded Elizabethtown, which was the first English-speaking colony in New Jersey. The town was named for Elizabeth, wife of Sir George Carteret, not for Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabethtown served as the first capital of New Jersey. During the American Revolutionary War, Elizabethtown’s geographic location made it a target for raids by the British. Elizabethtown was also used as a base camp for George Washington and the patriot militias. In 1855, the City of Elizabeth was created and then in 1857, Elizabeth became part of the newly created Union County. During the 19th century, Elizabeth became home to the Singer Sewing Machine Company, the Electric Vehicle Company, and the Electric Boat Company.
Located in Elizabeth are the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal and the Newark Liberty International Airport, both of which are some of the busiest transportation facilities in the world. Sections of Elizabeth are part of an urban enterprise zone; companies in this zone are free of certain taxes and restrictions. Elizabeth is home to New Jersey’s largest outlet mall, The Mills at Jersey Gardens. Midtown is a historic district that features many memorials and monuments of the American Revolution such as the First Presbyterian Church, the St. John’s Episcopal Church, and the Hersh Tower. Bayway Avenue and Elizabeth Avenue both contain numerous ethnic restaurants. In the spring, cherry blossoms can be seen at Warinanco Park, Mattano Park, and Veteran’s Memorial Waterfront Park. To celebrate its diverse population, Elizabeth hosts several ethnic festivals and parades each year; the Portugal Day Parade is the tri-state area’s largest Portuguese cultural demonstration of ethnic pride.
Plainfield is located in Union County in New Jersey and is nicknamed “The Queen City.” Plainfield has a humid continental climate, meaning hot, humid summers and brisk to cold winters. Going back in history, the area was settled in 1684 by Quakers. In 1847, Plainfield Township was formed and then it became part of the newly created Union County in 1857. Plainfield was incorporated as a city in 1869. During the summer of 1967, the city was affected by the Plainfield riots, which were a string of racially charged violent disturbances. Today Plainfield has a population of 49,808 and the racial makeup of the city is 50.20% African American, 40.37% Hispanic, 23.54% White, and 0.95% Asian (2010 Census). Unfortunately Plainfield is a dangerous city to reside in. Sections of Plainfield are part of an urban enterprise zone; companies in this zone are free of certain taxes and restrictions. Plainfield is home to the Plainfield Symphony, New Jersey’s oldest community symphony.
