Area code 914 is the area code for Westchester County, New York. When area code 914 was put into service on January 1, 1947, it was one of New York’s original area codes. Area code 914 was split to form area code 516 in 1951 and then split to form area code 845 in 2000.
Yonkers is the fourth most populous city in New York and is the most populous city in Westchester County. Yonkers is located along the Hudson River and is an inner suburb of New York City. Going back in history, Adriaen van der Donck purchased a grant of land from the Dutch East India Company in 1645. When he died, his land was given to Frederick Philipse in the late 17th century. During the 1700s, Yonkers was a small farming town with an active industrial waterfront. In 1853, the first elevator factory in the world opened in Yonkers. Yonkers was incorporated as a village in 1854 and then incorporated as a city in 1872. In 1888, the first golf course was founded in Yonkers. Today Yonkers has a population of 195,976 and the racial makeup of the city is 55.8% White, 34.7% Hispanic, 18.7% African American, and 5.9% Asian (2010 Census). Yonkers has a large ethnic community, including Irish-American, Italian-American, Portuguese, Slavic, and Arab. Downtown Yonkers is known as Getty Square and is the civic center, central business district, and transit hub of the city. From the Cross County Shopping Center to the Ridge Hill shopping complex, Yonkers is Westchester County’s retail center. Points of interest in the city include the Untermyer Park and Gardens, the Westchester’s Ridge Hill, the Hudson River Museum, the Empire City Casino, the Van der Donck Park, and the Philipse Manor Hall.
New Rochelle is the seventh most populous city in New York and is located in Westchester County. New Rochelle is situated in the southeastern point of New York on the Long Island Sound. New Rochelle is nicknamed “Queen City of the Sound.” Going back in history, the area was settled in 1688 by refugee French Protestants. Many of them were artisans and craftsmen from La Rochelle, France, hence the name New Rochelle. The town and village of New Rochelle were chartered as one city in 1889.
New Rochelle is home to some of the country’s most expensive real estate, namely the north end of the city. Manufacturing and warehousing used to be big sectors of the economy until industrial land was converted to “big box” retailer use. Now the majority of employed residents have occupations in business, sales, and service. New Rochelle has an impressive collection of parklands and nature preserves, including Glen Island Park, Five Islands Park, Hudson Park, Ward Acres, and Davids’ Island.

Today White Plains has a population of 56,853 and the racial makeup of the city is 48.9% White, 29.6% Hispanic, 13.2% African American, and 6.3% Asian (2010 Census). With a low crime rate, White Plains is a great city to reside in, however the cost of living is very high because of its proximity to New York City. White Plains’ economy is centered on large companies that have relocated to the city. Points of interest in the city include the White Plains Performing Arts Center, the Saxon Woods Park, the Silver Lake Preserve, and the White Plains Farmer’s Market.
