Situated in the far western corner of Texas on the north bank of the Rio Grande, El Paso is the sixth most populous city in the state and the county seat of El Paso County. El Paso lies at the intersection of Chihuahua, Texas, and New Mexico and is the only major Texas city located in the Mountain Time Zone. Located within the Chihuahuan Desert, El Paso has a desert climate, characterized by hot summers and mild, dry winters. During intense summer monsoonal thunderstorms, many parts of the city are subject to occasional flooding. El Paso is nicknamed “Sun City” because the sun shines more than 300 days each year; the average summer high is 95 degrees with very low humidity. Going back in history, Fray Garcia de San Francisco founded El Paso del Norte on the Rio Grande in 1659. El Paso was considered part of New Mexico under Spanish rule until its cession to the United States in 1848. The United States and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which made the settlements on the north bank of the Rio Grande a formal American settlement. The Compromise of 1850 placed El Paso on the Texas side. El Paso County was created in 1850 and El Paso became a city in 1873. In 1883, El Paso became the county seat of El Paso County.
Much of El Paso’s economy is centered on military, government, tourism, health care, international trade, and oil and gas. The University of Texas at El Paso is one of the city’s major employers and is the second largest university in the country to have a majority Mexican American student population.
