The 954 area code was put into effect in 1995 for Broward County in Florida. It was created as a split from the 305 area code in order to assist with numbering relief. Unfortunately, the 954 area code was quickly exhausted and needed to be overlaid by the 754 area code in 2002. As a result, residents in Broward County must now dial ten digits even when making local calls. Currently, the 954 area code is only assigned to new numbers issued to public offices and officials.

Fort Lauderdale was discovered by Spanish explorers back in the 16th century. After much conflict, including the Seven Years’ War, this portion of the 954 area code is currently a very modern city. The name “Fort Lauderdale” actually comes from one of these wars when the site of the 954 area code was used as a fort during the Second Seminole War.
