Saginaw is a city in Michigan located in an area known as Mid-Michigan or Central Michigan. Saginaw lies on the Saginaw River and is also the seat of Saginaw County. The city has a humid continental climate, meaning hot, humid summers and cold winters. Going back in history, Saginaw was a flourishing lumber town in the 19th century. The large demand for lumber allowed Saginaw’s population and economic activity to massively expand. During the 20th century, Saginaw was an important industrial and manufacturing center for the automotive industry. However, by the late 20th century, manufacturing greatly declined, which led to unemployment, crime, and a decrease in population. Today Saginaw has a population of 51,508 and the racial makeup of the city is 46.1% Black, 43.5% White, 14.3% Hispanic, and 0.3% Asian (2010 Census). Saginaw is not a safe city to visit or reside in due to the high crime rate; unemployment and a decrease in population led to a rise in abandoned homes that in turn provided places for criminal activities to occur.
